Holland (Dutch) Pavilion

Expo 2010 Dutch Pavlion

The Dutch submission to the 2010 World Expo
in Shanghai is an exceptional one. This time around, it will not be the
classic pavilion with long lines of visitors waiting outside and a
presentation inside. The Netherlands is making its appearance at
China’s world exposition along an entire street. The submission,
entitled “Happy Street”, is the response by designer John Kormeling to
the Chinese Expo theme “Better City, Better Life” and the sub-themes:

  • a. Urban cultural diversity
  • b. Urban economic growth and prosperity
  • c. Innovation in science and technology in urban contexts
  • d. Remodelling urban communities
  • e. Interaction between urban and rural areas.

An evaluation committee chaired by the
government architect has chosen a design from artist and architect John
Kormeling.

Houses

The street offers visitors the chance to explore the Expo theme more
deeply in any number of ways. It is the artist’s intention that the
seventeen or so houses – each one a tiny pavilion in itself – will
demonstrate how innovative the Netherlands is in its approaches to
space, energy and water. The houses are suited to varying types of
decoration, in order to attract a specially defined and interested
audience.

For example, the designer would like to have a water treatment
facility on site to filter river water into drinking water. Kormeling
would also like to see the Floating Boulder sculpture, which Wim T.
Schippers created together with the University of Delft, placed along
his street. Special guests will be welcomed in the giant crown housing
the VIP lounge.

Ambition

The Netherlands is extremely ambitious and wants to distinguish
itself pointedly and positively from other participants in the Shanghai
2010 World Expo. The goal is to have “Happy Street” included in the top
10 best pavilions. The presence in Shanghai will not only strengthen
relations with China, but the submission will also demonstrate that the
Netherlands occupies an important place in the European Union and the
global community.

The pavilion will likewise contribute to a stronger, modernized
image of the Netherlands in China. Besides being the land of tulips,
wooden shoes and windmills, “Happy Street” and the house exhibits will
demonstrate that the Netherlands is also a country developing modern
technology in harmony with people and the environment.

The Expo will hopefully also provide visitors with the impetus to
visit the Netherlands. The Netherlands is an appealing destination, not
only for business trips but also for the growing number of Chinese
tourists. They particularly enjoy the flower-filled landscapes dotted
with windmills, and the museums with their outstanding collections.

Plan

Before the Expo opens its doors, the Dutch organizers still have
much to accomplish. In early June 2007, the design will be submitted to
the Chinese Expo organization. After a permit is granted, construction
of the pavilion shall begin in mid-2008. “Happy Street” will be in
previews beginning 1 March 2010 and will officially open to the public
on 1 May of that year.

The commissioning group for the Dutch submission is the state
secretary of the Ministry for Economic Affairs. The execution of the
design is in the hands of the EVD, the Ministry’s agency for
international business and cooperation. The EVD will work with a
special project team both in the Netherlands as well as in China on the
construction and operational details of the pavilion.

For participation in the world exposition, a maximum budget of
twenty million euros has been made available. In addition to various
governmental groups, the Dutch corporate community is also able to lend
their support.
